Ethiopia Volcano Eruption LIVE Map: A long-dormant volcano known as the Hayli Gubbi in Ethiopia has erupted for the first time in nearly 12,000 years, spewing thick smoke up to 14 kilometres in the sky, impacting air travel around the world, including in India. Located in Ethiopia’s Afar region, nearly 800 km northeast of Addis Ababa, the volcano reportedly erupted for several hours. Standing about 500 meters tall, it sits in the Rift Valley, a geologically active zone where two tectonic plates meet.

Following the eruption, a thick, massive ash cloud started spreading across the Red Sea and towards South Asia, reaching India on Monday night. India’s aviation regulator – DGCA, has issued a detailed advisory telling airlines to avoid affected routes and asking airport operators to inspect runways and taxiways.
According to Flightradar24, the ash cloud caused by Hayli Gubbi’s eruption is currently going over India and is expected to travel over Bangladesh, parts of Myanmar and China and may reach the southern coast of Japan. According to Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the Director General of Meteorology at the India Meteorological Department, “The volcanic eruption released ash that slowly moved from Ethiopia towards Yemen and Oman, and then advanced towards the Arabian Sea. By yesterday [Monday] evening, it reached the Gujarat-Rajasthan region. Gradually, by midnight, it moved over Delhi and North India, and is now travelling over Eastern India.”
The ash has now travelled 4,000 km to New Delhi and seems to be moving to China. It is expected to clear from India by 7:30 PM tonight. However, it will be limited ot the atmosphere’s upper troposphere and won’t have any effect on the weather or air quality in the region.
