Ramesh Sippy’s iconic film ‘Sholay’ has completed 50 years since its release. Starring Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Amjad Khan, Jaya Bachchan, and Hema Malini, ‘Sholay’ remains one of the most loved films in Hindi cinema history. As the film turns half a century old, Sippy shares how ‘Sholay’ came to life and why it still holds a special place in the hearts of millions today.
Salim-Javed’s key contribution
Sippy gives credit to the film’s writers, the legendary duo Salim-Javed. In an interview with Hindustan Times, he said, “Salim-Javed have had a very important part in my journey as a filmmaker, be it ‘Sholay’, ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’, or ‘Shakti’. So, writers are always dear to me. They breathe life into stories like ‘Sholay’.” Their writing shaped the unforgettable characters and powerful dialogues from “Kitne aadmi the?” to “Basanti, in kutto ke samne mat nachna,” that continue to be a hit among people.
From slow start to massive hit
Initially, ‘Sholay’ did not do well at the box office. But soon, word spread and the film’s popularity grew quickly. It became the highest-grossing Indian film for over a decade. Even now, ‘Sholay’ holds the record for selling the most tickets of any Indian film. Its appeal has remained strong across generations.
No one can copy its magic
After ‘Sholay’’s success, many films tried to copy its style, with several parodies too. However, none could match the original’s magic. Talking about the secret behind the film’s success, Sippy smiled and said, “If you find out, let me know too.” He added, “It must be just enjoyed.” This shows that some things cannot be explained, they simply must be felt.
Sippy admits he does not watch ‘Sholay’ very often
Though ‘Sholay’ is often shown on TV and re-released, Ramesh Sippy admits he does not watch it very often himself. But this year, he plans to watch it for the anniversary. He said, “I will watch it for the 50th anniversary.”
A new 4k restored version
To mark the special occasion, a restored 4K version of ‘Sholay’ will be screened at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival this September. An India premiere date has not been announced yet. This restored version will allow new audiences to experience ‘Sholay’ in brilliant clarity.
