iPhone 17 Air: Everything we know about Apple’s thinnest phone ever | Technology News

Apple is soon set to launch its iPhone 17 series, and various reports indicate that the ‘Plus’ model will be discontinued and replaced by Apple’s thinnest phone, called “iPhone 17 Air”. Based on the reports, the new lineup of iPhones will feature iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone 17 Air.

Reportedly, the iPhone 17 Air will be 5.5 mm thick, making it the thinnest iPhone ever made by Apple. The camera bump is not included in this measurement, as it is thought to house a single 48MP camera. Some reports also suggest that the iPhone 17 Air may be priced higher than the base iPhone 17 but cheaper than the iPhone 17 Pro models.

Battery and colour options leaked

In a recent Naver blog post, a user named Lanzuk shared a photo of a battery believed to be from the iPhone 17 Air. The site claims that the width of the iPhone 17 Air’s battery is just 2.49 mm, making it appear much slimmer than the rumoured iPhone 17 Pro battery.

The iPhone 17 Air’s battery capacity is expected to be significantly smaller than that of the iPhone 16 Plus, as indicated by its compact size. On the Naver blog, another tipster, yeux1122, revealed that the 6.6-inch iPhone 17 Air weighs about 145 grams and contains a 2,800 mAh battery. This information is believed to come from a “mass production confirmed sample”. The tipster has earlier offered accurate insights into Apple’s strategy for iPhone components.

On 30 July, another tipster, Sonny Dickson from Bluesky, posted rendered images of the iPhone 17 Air featuring a new camera island. They also revealed that the iPhone 17 Air will be available in four colours: light blue, standard white, black, and light gold.

When will the Apple iPhone 17 Air be launched?

The launch is reportedly scheduled for either Monday, 8 September 2025, or Wednesday, 10 September 2025, according to several sources, including Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

Design and specifications

The slimmer iPhone 17 Air will likely sport a unique design. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg mentioned that the iPhone 17 Air will be about two millimetres slimmer than the iPhone 16 Pro.

The thinnest iPhone ever was the iPhone 6, which measured 6.9 mm. iPhones became thicker starting with the iPhone X to accommodate more space for the battery, camera lenses, Face ID hardware, and other components. The iPhone 17 Air might be up to 9.5 mm thick, including the camera bump. This means the camera bump will likely be noticeably thicker than the rest of the device.

When it comes to performance, since the Pro models are expected to feature Apple’s A19 Pro chips, the lighter iPhone 17 Air may get either of the two. It may also get the high-end A19 Pro with fewer GPU cores. The device could also sport 12GB RAM, similar to the top-of-the-line models. It needs to be noted that the iPhone 16 lineup features 8GB RAM.
