The much-awaited iPhone 17 launch is nearing, and news about the next-gen Apple devices is flooding the internet. According to the latest leaks, the iPhone 17 Pro models are likely to feature reverse wireless charging, meaning the phone would be able to wirelessly charge other Apple accessories. If true, this could be the first time that Apple will be bringing this breakthrough to iPhones.
A Weibo-based leaker named Fixed Focus Digital has shared that Apple is reportedly testing wireless charging for the company’s new top-of-the-line smartphones. However, it remains to be seen whether Apple will introduce the feature on the iPhone 17 lineup, which is due for launch next month. Earlier this year, it was reported another Weibo leaker suggested that Apple had been testing 7.5W reverse charging for the Pro models in the iPhone 17 series. With a feature like this, iPhone users would be able to charge their AirPods, Apple Watch, etc.
Multiple sources have confirmed that the Cupertino-based tech giant has completed testing; however, it is yet to be confirmed if the feature will make it to the final product. Apple has a history of introducing reverse charging, albeit in a limited manner.
Back in 2021, the company launched the MagSafe Battery Pack that allowed the iPhone to charge the battery pack while it was being charged through the Lightning cable. This was essentially the first time the iPhone maker allowed its smartphone to route power to an external device. The company, however, discontinued the MagSafe Battery Pack in September 2023 with the launch of the iPhone 15 lineup that introduced the USB-C port. As of now all iPhones with USB-C can reverse charge devices through the USB-C port at up to 4.5 watts.
The iPhone 17 lineup is expected to be introduced at Apple’s annual event next month. While the dates are not confirmed yet, the launch date seems to be September 9. If Apple decides to introduce reverse charging on the iPhone 17 Pro, then the new devices will compete with other rivals like the recently launched Pixel 10 series or the Samsung Galaxy S25 series.
